• Lamivudine is a potent nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor.
• Lamivudine is administered orally, and it is rapidly absorbed with a bio-availability of over 80%. Some research suggests that lamivudine can cross the blood-brain barrier.
• Lamivudine is often given in combination with zidovudine, with which it is highly synergistic.
• Lamivudine treatment has been shown to restore zidovudine sensitivity of previously resistant HIV.
• Several mutagenicity tests show that lamivudine should not show mutagenic activity in therapeutic doses.

• It can inhibit both types of HIV reverse transcriptase and also the reverse transcriptase of hepatitis B. It needs to be phosphorylated to its triphosphate form before it is active.

• Lamivudine is a nucleoside analogue, which was originally licensed for the treatment of HIV.
• It is now additionally licensed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B with evidence of viral replication.
• It is marketed by Glaxo SmithKline with the brand names Zeffix, Heptovir, Epivir, and Epivir-HBV.
• Transient elastography has demonstrated clinical potential in the noninvasive evaluation of hepatic fibrosis by measurement of liver stiffness in chronic hepatitis C.
• To determine the mutation of YMDD motif  and codon 528 in chronic HBV patients with lamivudine therapy using PCR-direct sequencing and to investigate the relationship between lamivudine mediated HBV mutation and HBeAg.
• Urine samples were also obtained from two animals.

• The drug was quantitated in CSF and plasma with a reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography technique.
